I have a very similar photo which I did paint, but only to create a birthday “card” for our granddaughter in the UK. I didn’t want to rely on the mail during Covid so emailed a copy of it instead. Like you I get too anal with my art, I really must try and loosen up!

I do this with colour too, I'll take a photo as the colour combo calls to me so deeply but then I find that i end up diverting away from the idea or it doesn't look so good when it comes to art in 'real life'!

I think mine stems from a little bit of self doubt, I'll carry on with the photos though as i do find them useful for inspiration too.

I take a lot of photos and screenshots. I often feel a bit guilty that I can never paint all of them, but some will inspire me for their composition, some for the value contrast and some for the colors, so it all gets swirled around in my brain and will come out in my art in other ways than in a detailed reproduction of the photograph.

Probably the best way, the ease of taking photo's can give us the inspiration or motivation in any way. I suppose we should embrace the simplicity even if we can't paint everything 😀
