It can really brighten a day to add a colour or new paper to art supplies, even a single pencil. I never pass an art shop with indifference, but as there is an excellent one on a regular weekly route, I do have to exercise restraint. Preferences for art materials are always fascinating.
Can not resist! When I saw this heading I was struggling to fit all the journals, sketchbooks, and other goodies into my over full suitcase! I love the European paper stores, the beautiful cards - and the presumption that people write ✍️ to one another!
I enjoy using Seawhite 350gsm paper in loose sheets -- no need for stretching, slightly textured, and at a price point that allows for play.
Art shops are second only to second hand bookshops with well stocked arts sections. Inverness used to have both, literally across the road from one another. Leakey's still exists, but the art shop closed when the owner retired.
Some things are worth the money and you won’t regret it. Arches is my go to paper and I buy my sketchbooks handmade with arches. When I started out I didn’t understand color mixing so I bought (some say collected) over 100 tubes of Daniel Smith paint (which is a PNW manufacturer). Funny now because I use a fairly limited palette and have to intentionally bring in some of my “collected” colors. Fortunately the nearest art store from me is over an hour and a half away. Unfortunately for me when I do see an art store I tend to binge on things like ink or pens or paper blocks. Thanks for posting!
A great must-read for aspiring artists! As a newbie to sketching, I'm taking notes and starting to understand the feel of different papers. I've learned that cheaper isn't always better

That is the consensus of many🤣 we are all suckers for a good art shop

Yes the Seawhite is very reasonable although i do need to try Arches at some point. I'm trying to resist going into them now I'm working less 😫

I could walk by art shops, but then again I would walk into one over some of the other types of things.
Good answer 🤣
